Rooted in Christian traditions of moral and political theology, the McDonald Centre works at the crossroads of academia, church, and society to envision and help build more just, generous, and democratic forms of common life.
Our mission unfolds through three key actions:
- Listening through interdisciplinary research, critical inquiry, and open conversation across lines of constructive disagreement.
- Connecting by building partnerships, hosting scholars, and organising events that foster collaboration.
- Sharing through publications, lectures, workshops, and media.
The McDonald Centre’s Research Fellowship offers an opportunity for exceptional scholars to contribute to a dynamic and interdisciplinary research community in Oxford. The Fellowship supports researchers whose work aligns with the Centre’s mission and who are eager to engage collaboratively across disciplines while developing ambitious, high-quality scholarship.
Fellows become part of an intellectually vibrant environment, benefiting from the academic life of Oxford while contributing to the Centre’s research initiatives, events, and public engagement activities. We welcome applications from researchers at different career stages whose work demonstrates originality, rigour, and clear relevance to the Centre’s areas of focus.
There is no fee associated with the Research Fellowship.

Visitorship at the Faculty of Theology
Applicants to the Research Fellowship at the McDonald Centre who wish to receive formal Faculty affiliation, a University email address, and full library access should consider applying separately for a visitorship at the Faculty of Theology and Religion alongside their fellowship application.
While the Research Fellowship and Faculty visitorship are distinct processes, holding both may provide additional institutional privileges and formal recognition within the University during the period of residence in Oxford.
Applicants are encouraged to review the visitorship requirements carefully and consult potential Faculty sponsors at an early stage. Please note that the Centre Director, Luke Bretherton, can nominate individuals for visitorships. If you are interested solely in applying for a visitorship, please contact mcdonaldcentre@theology.ox.ac.uk with your academic CV.
