Each year, the Director of the McDonald Centre, in their capacity as Subject Coordinator for Christian Ethics, Political Theology, and Pastoral and Practical Theology in Oxford’s Faculty of Theology and Religion, convenes the Christian Ethics Research Seminar.
The seminar normally meets four times in each of Michaelmas, Hilary, and Trinity Terms. In Trinity, one meeting usually coincides with the McDonald Centre’s annual conference, while the final gathering takes the form of an end-of-year subject-area party. Seminars are usually held at South West Canonry, Christ Church.
Each 90-minute seminar centres on a paper by a scholar from Oxford or, more often, elsewhere, followed by lively discussion. Conversation continues informally afterwards in the Buttery Bar at Christ Church.
The seminar brings together faculty, graduate students, post-docs, and researchers working in Christian ethics, political theology, and practical theology, as well as those drawn by a particular topic or interdisciplinary conversation. Students have the privilege of asking the first questions. Faculty from these fields and from other disciplines also participate, alongside visitors to Oxford, including Visiting Fellows of the McDonald Centre.
