Rethinking EDI: A Democratic Approach to Diversity and Inclusion

Director Luke Bretherton recently contributed to a seminar for diversity officers at Oxford University, presenting an alternative approach to equality, diversity, and inclusion work.

Drawing on the Golden Rule, Professor Bretherton proposed a framework centered on agency, contribution, and participation. Rather than relying solely on rights-based approaches, his model takes its lead from democratic principles, emphasizing the active role individuals play in shaping inclusive communities.

The presentation offered diversity officers an opportunity to explore how democratic frameworks might complement existing EDI strategies.
