19 February | Book Symposium

Join us for an enriching Book Symposium to discuss Dr Mathew Elia's newest book, The Problem of the Christian Master: Augustine and the Afterlives of Slavery (Yale University Press, 2024). Dr Matthew Elia will give a brief overview of the book followed by two responses from doctoral students and then discussion.

The symposium is the first in what is hoped will be other, ad hoc events that provide opportunities for these three research seminars to gather for shared conversation and learning at the intersection of the three fields. Elia’s book provides just such a point of confluence.

The symposium is jointly hosted by the Christian Ethics Research Seminar, the Patristics Research Seminar, and the Historical and Systematic Theology Research Seminar.

Additional Information: Reading Group

Ahead of the event you are invited to join McDonald Postdoctoral Fellow Dr Sam Tranter for a reading group on Elia’s book.

The group will meet in Christ Church on two occasions prior to the event:

  • Th 22 Jan, 11am-12noon (Intro, Chapters 1-3)
  • Th 12 Feb, 11am-12noon (Chapters 4-5, Epilogue)

A digital version of the book will soon be available through the university libraries.
