Each year the Director of the McDonald Centre, as Regius Chair of Moral and Pastoral Theology and so Subject Coordinator for Christian Ethics and Political Theology in Oxford’s Faculty of Theology and Religion, organises a regular Christian Ethics Research Seminar.
The seminar customarily meets four times in Michaelmas Term, four times in Hilary Term, and four times in Trinity Term – in the last of these, one of these meetings is usually taken up by the McDonald Centre annual conference, and the final meeting is a subject area end-of-year party. The seminar is usually held at South West Canonry in Christ Church.
Format wise, each seminar lasts 90 minutes and features a paper from a scholar – either from Oxford or more often from elsewhere – and lively discussion, which continues informally at the Buttery Bar in Christ Church after each seminar.
The seminar is attended by graduate students, both those researching within these fields, and those drawn to a particular topic or interdisciplinary dialogue, and our practice is for students to ask the first questions. Faculty from these fields as well as other disciplines join us, and we often welcome a number of visitors, including Visiting Fellows of the McDonald Centre.
